The British/American Studies Institute

  The British/American Studies Institute was established to improve the understanding of American and British culture through various academic activities involving English?speaking areas. To this end, the Institute invites scholars at home and abroad to hold open lectures and seminars on the history, politics, society, literature, and the arts of English?speaking areas. In addition, the Institute collects books and material for the study of these areas, and holds study sessions on a regular basis to deepen understanding of these cultures.

  In the future, the Institute will strengthen ties with the Korean studies institutes working in English- speaking countries. To realize these goals, it will increase academic exchanges with English American Studies institutes in foreign countries to invigorate the study of American and British cultures.

European Regional Studies Institute

  The Institute was established in 1999 to meet the government's demand for globalization and to create more professional personnel working in and studying politics, economics, culture, and other academic fields in Europe.

  Its mid and long?term itinerary includes five areas: research, education, academic events, facilities, and finances. The Institute plans to create a joint?research team to study for the next two to five years how the European Union (EU) was created, the wide spectrum of the European cultures, and the language policies of EU members. To achieve this, it will recruit more talented researchers and attempt to attract more research funds.

  Close attention will be paid to education by linking European Regional Studies?related majors to the Interdisciplinary Program of European Studies graduate courses. It will strengthen social awareness by establishing open courses for the public.

  In addition, academic seminars will be held on topics such as the 21st century cooperative relationship between Europe and Korea, the European Union and an Asian union, European and Korean policies on the environment, and the economic and trade policies of Europe and Korea. The Institute's facility has yet to be fully furnished. More effort will be made to attract research funds.

Research Institute for Humanities

  The goal of the Research Institute for Humanities is to conduct studies on Humanities, and find ways for this field of study to contribute to the evolvement of society. Particularly, at this time of history, the issue is what kind of role it should play. Against this backdrop, the Institute performs the following activities: studying Humanities areas and leading academically supported projects, launching a social awareness campaign to popularize this field of study, collecting and organizing  Humanities data, holding academic seminars to present study results, conducting cooperative research with other research institutes and academic circles, and performing research projects requested by outside institutions.

Institute for Religion and Culture

  The Institute for Religion and Culture conducts research and studies on primitive religions, historical religions, new?emerging religions, Asian and Western religions, and the cultural phenomena accompanying the rises and falls of these religions using the research methods of humanities and social studies. Through these activities, the Institute expects to contribute to the development of these fields of study, and increase the exchanges and understanding among peoples, religions, and cultures.

  To this end, the Institute publishes academic journals, and hold academic seminars, and conferences on a regular basis. Through cooperation and exchanges with research centers at home and abroad, it pursues the evolvement of studies of religion and culture.

Center for Philosophical Studies

  The Center for Philosophical Studies was established to conduct systematic, professional, and comprehensive studies on Asian and Western philosophies. It seeks to manage Humanities and Social Studies and Natural Sciences exchange programs systematically, run research?supporting programs for future generations, and develop philosophy educational programs for a wider layer of audience.

  By working for the popularization of philosophy and delivering philosophy education to the greater public, the Center aims to create a new culture based on the understanding of philosophy in the future. To this end, the Center performs the following activities: carrying out long and shortterm projects utilizing every condition given, and conducting research and education systems efficient by adopting team?oriented system.

  The Center also focuses on maximizing the efficiency of the study of philosophy by conducting systematic, professional, and comprehensive studies of Asian and Western philosophical thoughts by recruiting as many talented research staff as possible. Through this, the Center will realize one of its long?term visions to transform itself to one of the most acclaimed philosophical research and educational institutes.

  The Center has a will to strengthen and expand its educational functions by running post?doctoral supporting programs, developing philosophy education contents and programs, offering open lectures, opening cultural courses on basic philosophical education, logics, and essay writing, and philosophy camps for local residents. Through these activities, more professionals in this field of study are expected to be cultivated, and philosophy will approach the general public not as an academic subject but as a part of our lives. By deepening its academic level of study and popularizing its areas at the same time, the Center is eager to contribute partly to forming of future cultural trends.

 

Korean Language and Literature Studies Institute

  At the fierce controversy over globalization, and identity crisis particularly due to language issues, the Korean Language and Literature Studies Institute conducts and supports language education programs and various research programs to stay relevant in the changing era.

  To this end, the Institute aims to conduct further research on Korean literature, to make these results pervasive, and to remain committed to education and research activities regarded to be necessary for future generations in the knowledge?based society. The Institute carries out projects contributing to the globalization of the Korean literature by supporting academic activities related to Korean literature and building the research and information network.

Research Center for Japanese Studies

  The goal of the Research Center for Japanese Studies is to develop the Japanese studies in Korea, to contribute to greater understanding between Korea and Japan and cultural exchanges, and to develop the local community at the same time by building a database of Japanese studies and conducting comprehensive and systematic studies on Japan in terms of Japanese language, culture, folklore, history, politics, economy, and society.

  To achieve this goal, the Center plans to host domestic and international academic conferences, publish academic journals, collect research material, and perform increasing amount of exchanges on this topic with domestic and foreign universities and academic institutes.

Research Center for History and Culture

  The Research Center for History and Culture conducts comprehensive studies on Korean history, and Asian and Western history. It strives to build an organic and comprehensive research system with related fields of study, to develop history education programs and contents for various layer of demanders, and to contribute to the popularization of historical contents and creation of a new culture. To achieve these goals, the Center carries out the following activities:

  - Study of Korean, and Asian and Western History comprehensively and systematically

  - nvestigation of methods of tying with related fields of studies, and academic exchanges

  - operating a stable research support program for future generations of scholars and researchers

  - operating various educational programs to teach history and culture in step with the popu- larization phenomena of history study

Management Research Institute

  The Management Research Institute was established to study theories on business administration, economy, and trade, and how to apply them into practice, thereby contributing to the cooperation among industry, education, and government. To this end, the Institute conducts research projects, education programs, academic studies, and consulting services. These activities include diagnosis of a business administration practices, consulting services for company guidance and administration, business plan assessments for public companies or local governments, research of cost planning, publishing journals and periodicals, and offering education and training programs to nurture professionals.

  To perform these activities, seven specialized research centers have been made part of the Institute. The Research Center for Electronic Commerce is one example, and research centers for cost planning, 6 sigma business administration renovation, customer satisfaction, OD consulting, service science, and SCM/logistics provide professional and comprehensive consulting services of full?time scholars, researchers, and the advisory committee.

  The Institute’s organizational chart is comprised of competent research staff with 40 faculty members of the Division of Business Administration, CNU, principal and full?time researchers. The organization chart is as follows:

Institute of Law and Public Administration

 

  The Institute of Law and Public Administration was established to contribute to the development of social sciences in Korea through research and study activities on law and public administration issues. To this end, the Institute carries out the following activities:

 

  - studies general phenomena related to law and public administration

  - conducts research and studies by external requests

  - publishes books and thesis collections

  - holds research seminars, culture courses, and academic conferences

  - cooperates and exchanges with academic institutions at home and abroad

  - performs other related activities

 

Institute of Social Sciences

  The Institute of Social Sciences came into existence to contribute to the development of social sciences through various research activities on social phenomena and to study the social phenomena occurring in the community of Gwangju and Jeonnam region, and in the Korean communities in foreign countries.

  The Institute is involved in research and studies on general phenomena of our society, carries out research projects requested by external entities, publishes theses collections, and holds academic conferences, seminars, and culture courses.

 

Research Institute for Asia and Pacific Rim

 

  The Research Institute for Asia and Pacific Rim was established to academically approach issues on society, economy, politics, and culture of the Asia and Pacific region including issues pertaining to the Korean peninsula and unification between the two Koreas.

  To achieve this goal, the Institute plans to hold domestic and international academic conferences, host discussion sessions with specialists, promote lectures inviting prominent scholars on these issues, publish research results, and drive exchanges with local and overseas researchers and academic exchanges with foreign research institutes. The Institute strives to conduct research activities to collect data on the seven million Koreans working overseas to utilize to enhance the competitiveness of our country.

 

 

May 18 Institute

  In order to explore the meanings and possibilities of using the lessons of 5.18 Gwangju Democratic Movement and to contribute to the evolvement of democracy and the improvement of human rights in Korea, the May 18 Institute has continued to carry out the following activities since its establishment on December 10, 1996:

  - researches material related to 5.18 Movement

  - publishes and advertises research results, and presents them to the public

  - offers information on 5.18 Movement to foreign countries as well as the general public in Korea

  - studies and applies ideology on democracy, human rights, and peace

  Every May, the Institute hosts large?scale domestic and overseas academic conferences, publishes thesis collections, research anthology, and brochures on the 5.18 Movement in Gwangju. To support these activities, the Institute strives to emphasize democratic values. The Institute’s journal, Democracy and Human Rights, issued twice annually, has been designated as one of the Korea Research Foundation’s Registration Journals, a status of a nationally acclaimed periodical in Korea. In the future, the Institute will operate various educational programs on democracy and human rights, and establish a database of the material on the 5.18 Movement. It seeks ways to become a democratic human rights and peace center in Asia through vigorous exchanges and cooperation with research institutes at home and abroad.

Institute of Women's Studies

  The Institute of Women’s Studies aims at bringing about ways to prompt gender equality, developing female potential powers, and improving women’s social status in society. To achieve these goals, it conducts studies and activities to increase the role of women in the society.

  In terms of gender?related study, the Institute holds regular academic conferences and discussion sessions, and conducts interdisciplinary joint research projects, thereby creating chances for domestic and foreign scholars to exchange information and thoughts and broadening their academic horizons. In the local community, the Institute collects data on the current situation of female rights in this region and provides programs that can enhance the ability and possibility to work in cooperation with the Gwangju Metropolitan government, female rights’ organizations, and the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family. In addition, it also hosts leadership camps targeting CNU female students to nurture them into leaders for future generation, and employment?enhancing programs for girls.

 

 

Center for Regional Development

  The Center for Regional Development first began as CNU?attached legal institute back in 1968 to fertilize various studies on regional studies issues. It focuses on solving general issues of the local region through research and analysis of the economy, society, city planning, environment, and transportation.

  Through comprehensive research and analysis of the current economy, society, city planning, environment, transportation, the Institute strives to solve related issues through suggesting a regional development model.

  In order to publish its research results, the Institute has issued a journal, Regional Development Study, since 1969, publishing its 47th issue in December 2006. For more vigorous discussion and stimulation of research, it holds a discussion session each month. In 2006, three special discussion sessions were held to discuss theory on regional development, and practical matters relating to the topic.

  The Institute has published twice every year since 2000, and supported the public demand for promising regional research since 2005. In step with the globalization trend, it hosts an international academic conference in cooperation with Hudan University from China, and Saga University from Japan.

  The institute is making greater efforts along with businesses and pubic organizations to nurture development in Gwangju and the Jeonnam region. It aims to become a central institute linking industry and academia in this region.

 

Research Institute for Basic Sciences

  The Research Institute for Basic Sciences was established to enhance basic sciences by conducting research on qualitative improvement of basic sciences. To this end, the Institute carries out the following activities:

  - conducts world?class research activities in each field thanks to basic science financial support from the Ministry of Education and Human Resources.

  - Holds domestic and international academic conferences and discussion sessions on basic science issues.

  - Conducts research requested by external parties, and joint studies between industry and the University

  The Institute was established as a CNU?attached Applied Physics Institute in 1967, and changed its system and name to Science and Chemistry Institute in 1970. And in 1983, the CNU?attached Research Institute for Basic Sciences was born by incorporating the Marine Institute, Science/Chemistry Institute, and Chemistry Institute. It was designated as a central institute in Gwangju and the Jeonnam region in 1994, and is now actively working on research projects in Hydraulics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Environment, and the global environment.

 

Human Economics Research Institute

  Originating from the Home Science Institute established in 1991, the Human Economics Research Institute studies home economics?related issues to contribute to improving our life quality and welfare level. In order to meet the current demands of society, it expands its study horizons, and focuses on education and consulting services for the community. So far, it has conducted research requested by external parties including writing a book about the history on women’s rights in the City of Gwangju, preserving keepsakes from the 5.18 Democratic Movement, and carrying out a research on the influence of Hangbisan, Sulfur?based Oriental Medicine on weight loss.

  It also studies the changes of Korean physical conditions, and new physical standards for Koreans, including standardization of spectacle frames. Furthermore, it publishes a journal, Human Economics Research, annually, and hosts more than 6 discussion sessions and 2 workshops for child counselors a year. In the years to come, the Institute plans to develop on?the?job training courses for specialists working in this field, and offer open lectures on and off- campus.

 

 

18. Plant Resources Institute

  The Plant Resources Institute is aimed at identifying where plant resources are distributed in South Korea and their biological characteristics, and conducting basic studies on how to preserve and utilize them. To achieve this goal, it carries out the following activities:

  - Invigorates basic and applied studies on plant resources

  - Develops creative resources through industry?academia cooperation by collecting and managing basic information for the development of BT industry in the 21st century

  - Explores a new possibility for application of this field of study by searching for more resource plants, analyzing their elements, measuring the degree of activity of the functional materials, and authorization of organisms

  - Provides information on how to preserve and re?build the ecosystem through raising endangered plant species

  - Exchanges research results and technology with industry partners and other higher learning institutions through symposiums, seminars, and international joint studies

 

 

 

19. Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology

  The Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology’s goal is to contribute to the development of agriculture by conducting various research projects and studies to develop agricultural technology and resources, and look for ways to increase profitability.

  The Institute was originally launched as the College of Agriculture Farm and Fishing Village Development Institute back in 1963, which changed its name to the Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology in 1991. It now performs studies on agricultural and science technology, and agro?economy and agro?administration to maximize the income generated by the agricultural and fishing community. Currently the Institute has eight research departments, carrying out vigorous research activities.

 

 

20. Functional Foods Research Center

  The Functional Foods Research Center was launched on January 31, 2005 to lead the future?oriented, efficient, environment?friendly, and human?centered functional food industry, and to help transform the industry into a competitive business part cable of improving national competitiveness. To attain this goal, it tries to promote basic and applied researches on functional and related foods, and aggressively carries out the development of practical and creative technology through industry and education cooperation efforts in this region. The Center’s departments of research planning, functional food substance research, and functional food development, conducts research on the efficacy of functional food substances.

 

 

21. Research Institute of Nursing Science

  The Research Institute of Nursing Science promotes effective and concrete ways of managing physical health through research in nursing science and nursing education programs. To this end, it supports joint research projects among professors, clinical nurses, and public health personnel. Furthermore, it supports research activities to acquire research funds at home and abroad, develops teaching methods for nursing students and on?the?job training programs, public health awareness programs targeting local residents, and conducts joint research projects among industry, schools, and research institutes, thereby producing world?class professional nursing personnel.

  The Institute holds national and international academic conferences and seminars, publishes journals, newsletters, and academic materials, runs professionals nurturing programs and a nursing center, and develops projects such as Internet?aided nursing education programs and nursing personnel training programs.

 

 

22. Veterinary Medicine Research Institute

  The Veterinary Medicine Research Institute was established in 1997 to conduct basic and applied research that can contribute to the development of the field of veterinary medicine. It tries to improve the productivity of local hog raising and stock breeding, and to enrich the quality of life of the general public. To this end, it promotes the local industry utilizing livestock, and to conduct research requested by external or national organizations on pets, companion animals, special, wild animals, and animals that need preserving such as Korea’s Jingo dog. The Institute strives to seek practical ways to cure diseases and prevent epidemics, a main concern in related industries and livestock?breeding farms. It conducts various academic activities including holding seminars and publishing journals.

 

 

23. Biotechnology Research Center

  The Biotechnology Research Center was established on May 8th, 1985 in order to lead the development of basic and creative studies in this field of study, establish the cooperative system between industry and academia, and foster talented personnel by gathering and utilizing scholars from various fields of study.

  The Center has acquired more than 3.3 billion won of research funds on 147 research projects from the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development and Korea Research Foundation, thereby securing about sixty kinds of experimental tools. It has hosted 12 research presentations on genetic engineering and 18 local and international symposia and 125 seminars, and published about 213 theses.

  The Center is currently playing a key role in biotechnology?nurturing projects and BT industry?nurturing projects with 34 full?time and part?time researchers. It hosts national and international academic conferences, publishes newsletters every year, and promotes itself through regular updates of information posted on its website. It actively participates in research projects such as NRL, frontier project promoted by the Ministry of Science and Technology, and research projects sponsored by Korea Research Foundation and Korea Science and Engineering Foundation. In addition, it does its best to develop local industry through cooperation with academia.

 

 

24. Research Institute of Drug Development

  The Research Institute of Drug Development was established in 1992 to create new drugs, making an effort to contribute to the development of pharmacology and cooperation between industry and school.

  It holds symposia on a regular basis to identify domestic and overseas research trends, and publishes newsletters annually, noting papers published, patents status, and the list of books written by researchers working at the Institute. The Institute strives to gather research funds needed for developing new drugs and to revitalize the research activities in the Institute.

  In a world where national competitiveness heavily relies on the level of biotechnology, competition is becoming fiercer to get the upper hand in the drug market, which is expected to create a huge value?added industry. The demand is higher than ever to build on research capacity in each country, which leads to creations of more new drugs. Researchers in the Research Institute of Drug Development focus on identifying the functions of human genes, how to develop new drugs through receptor research, the study of new biologically activating materials utilizing natural resources, and developing bio materials. Their research activities are appraised to have competitive power in the world market. Based on this technology, the expectation and zeal for new drugs is soaring. The foundation for becoming a leading research centers has been prepared based on government support.

  The Center promises to develop into a nationally renowned institutes by securing more full?time researchers and creating synergies.

 

 

25. Research Institute of Medical Sciences

  The Research Institute of Medical Sciences came into existence on November 21, 1979, and contributes to the development of medical sciences and to the betterment of public health by studying cooperatively pressing issues.

  The Center is composed of the Director, General Manager, and research departments, focusing on the following activities:

  - develops research tasks in basic and clinical medicine and offers financial supports

  - carries out projects requested by external organizations on general medical issues, and tasks promoted by government policy

  - hosts domestic and overseas academic symposia, and delivers presentations of research results sponsored by the Institute

  - publishes journals, newsletters, and medical education materials

  - nurtures competent researchers, offers them chances to study abroad, and supports discussion sessions

 

 

26. Dental Science Research Institute

  Established on April 22, 1992, the Dental Science Research Institute consists of a Management Committee, Advisory Committee, and four departments of Oral Diseases Research, Oral Biology Research, Material Research, and Publishing/Education. It aims at developing dental science by performing related projects, publishing journals, providing education programs, developing new products, and conducting research requested by external parties.

  Its periodicals include newsletters and the Journal of Dental Science issued four times a year. It supports various academic events and promotes lifelong educational programs. In addition, it motivates and praise hard?working scholars by presenting the “Chiyoen Award” when they achieve excellent results in research and writing activities.

 

 

27. Hormone Research Center

  The Hormone Research Center is one of the Science Research Centers designated by the Korea Science and Engineering Foundation (KOSEF). The Center was founded in CNU in 1995 and has since grown into one of the most prestigious organizations in Korea based on the abundant financial support from KOSEF and CNU. In 2004, when the support from the KOSEF ended, the Center was designated as one of the Key Research Centers from the Korea Research Foundation.

  The goals of HRC are: 1) to become an internationally well?recognized research center for hormonal study by specializing its research on endocrine disorders, 2) to suggest fundamental treatments for hormone?causing diseases by identifying its causes, and 3) to contribute to the vitalization of the public health industry by technology transfer of prominent research results. The information obtained through these studies for the last 10 years will undoubtedly be utilized to identify new therapies against endocrinological diseases, improve the productivity of livestock, and control population and develop new drugs.

  At present, 3 teams, 9 professors from the Division of Bioscience, 3 temporary working professors, 6 post?Doc fellows, and 60 graduate students are working in the Center. Every year, it receives 700 million won and 2 billion won of research funds from the KOSEF and Korea Institute of Environmental Science and Technology.

 

 

28. Research Institute of Vibrio Infection

  The Research Institute of Vibrio Infection contributes to enhancing public health by identifying causes of legal communicable diseases such as Vibrio infection, various Vibrio-induced infections, and cholera. The Institute also conducts research on treatment measures, causative bacteria, and efficient methods of diagnosis and prevention of diseases. The focus of the research at the Institute, however, is on etiology of Vibrio infection, ecological and physiological studies of Vibrio bacteria, and measures for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of Vibrio infection.    

  The Institute aims to globalize its research network through numerous academic conferences, symposiums, and seminars, and through joint research projects with international research institutions. The Research Institute of Vibrio Infection works toward improving healthcare for the local community by providing research information and facilities to citizens, and cooperating with relevant local institutions and organizations.        

 

 

29. Engineering Research Institute

  Established in 1965, the Engineering Research Institute is dedicated to advancing engineering technology of Gwangju and the Jeonnam region. Utilizing eminent faculty members and researchers and cutting-edge research labs, the Institute is actively engaging in academic research as well as technical projects involving engineering examination, design, estimation and training in the region. 30. Photonics and Optical Technology Research Institute

  The goal of the Photonics and Optical Technology Research Institute is to take the lead in developing a future-oriented, energy-saving, and environmentally friendly photonics and optics industry, to advance the specialized industry of the local region, and to enhance national com- petitiveness.   In July 2002, the Nano Technology Research Center (NTRC) was established to form a network of human resources in nano technology research at CNU, and promote joint research and education of nano technology and the nano industry of the region.

  To advance the nano industry of Gwangju and increase national competitiveness, the NTRC endeavors to vitalize basic and applied research of nano technology and foster talented people through pragmatic inter-disciplinary nano technology education programs.   

  The work of the Nano Technology Research Center includes establishing a database on nano technology and industry, managing intellectual property on nano technology, exchanging research technology and information with industry and academia through academic conferences, symposiums and seminars, and conducting nano technology research. As the nano technology research hub of the region, the NTRC trains talented persons toward development of the local nano industry, and takes the lead in advancing the industry and collaborating with local businesses on technology develop- ment.

  Established by Presidential Decree No. 8814, the Chemical Industry Research Institute was later reorganized to focus on more specific areas of study as CNU had been designated to specialize in the chemical industry. In addition to producing necessities of life and basic resources for national economy, the chemical industry has always been a pioneer in introducing new technologies for the future. Catalysts are important in that they are used in most of the basic chemical reactions.

  The Research Institute for Catalysis was established to systemize catalysis research as a new research area of chemical processing, and to advance industry and academic development through interdisciplinary, joint research. In line with this, the Institute offers various services at moderate prices, including catalysis research projects commissioned to the Institute and catalyst performance testing. The Institute holds six annual meetings, international and domestic seminars, and publishes a collection of papers annually on new research trends. The Institute's endeavor and achievement was publicly recognized by its reception of citizens' award in academic contribution at the 4th Gwangju Awards Ceremony in 1990.

  Established in 1979, the Environmental Research Institute has been active in researching general aspects of the environment, including prevention of environmental pollution, environmental technology development, assessment of environmental pollution, use of environmental resources, and treatment of hazardous material generated on campus.

  The Institute is composed of a management office, education and research office, information and data office, and six affiliated centers.

  With proper treatment of experimental wastewater and hazardous wastes generated by chemical labs on campus, the Environmental Research Institute prevents environmental pollution on campus and pollution in public streams, and improves the research environment of labs on campus through regular safety checkups.

  Also, the Institute enhances its research capabilities through the publication of research papers, research achievements, and implementation of various research projects.

 

 

36. Honam Studies Research Center

  The Honam Studies Research Center is dedicated to promoting national culture by studying Korea's traditional culture, more specifically, that of the Honam region. Since its establishment in 1963, the Center has conducted comprehensive, in-depth research on topics such as ideology, literature, Honam culture, and regional studies, making it one of the powerhouses among the humanities research institutes at CNU. Eleven volumes of the Honam Studies series have been published so far. The journal, Honam Studies, is published twice a year, and was selected as a candidate journal for registration with the Korea Research Foundation (KRF) in 2006.   With the association of universities and local governments in Yeosu and Gwangyang, the Center for Regional Development was established to identify issues and resolve problems of the region in areas such as the economies of Yeosu and Gwangyang bay region, regional culture, politics, public administration, education, regional environment, and the 2012 Yeosu Expo, and to promote regional development of Yeosu and Gwangyang region.

    Statistics accounts for uncertainty of a given event based on probability. In the course of studying statistics, statistics theory and techniques applicable to unique characteristics of natural and social sciences should be devised and developed. These theories and techniques will help draw reasonable planning and predictions on each social situation. In this light, the objective of the Statistics Institute is to research and develop statistics theory and technique, and to spread statistics theory and technique to every corner of society.

  Established in June 1999, the Dinosaur Research Center was renamed as the Korea Dinosaur Research Center at the University Museum in October 2001. The objective of the Center is to conduct systemized and comprehensive research on dinosaurs and to train professional human resources in dinosaur research. Major activities of the Center include research on paleontology of fossils including dinosaur and pterosaur, study of sediment and environmental restoration, research of geologic time and preservation of fossil discovery sites, geological research of cultural properties, applied geologic experiments, duplication of dinosaur figures and study of design, development of education and culture programs, operation of cyber dinosaur museum, and international cooperative research with UNESCO. As the only research center in the nation that is specialized for dinosaur research, the Center makes a great contribution to the culture industry on dinosaurs as well as academic research. Since its establishment, the Korea Dinosaur Research Center has examined the dinosaur fossil sites in Haenam, Yeosu, Hwasun, Bosung, and Gosung in Gyungnam province, and offered educational programs on dinosaurs at the world dinosaur expositions in Mongolia and Russia. The Center has opened the Dinosaur Learning Center on August 3, 2005, and has been selected by the Cultural Heritage Administration on April 20, 2007, as the key organization to work toward the inclusion of dinosaur fossil sites along the southern coast of Korea as United Nations Natural World Heritage Sites.
